The GCC Financing Gap Is Not a Bank Failure: It Is a Growth Story

Arash Jalali, Co-Founder and CEO of Raven, joins Raghda Ibraheem as the GCC’s private credit market, currently $6 to $7 billion, stands against a global market of $1.3 trillion expected to reach $3 trillion, and the region’s $250 billion financing gap is reframed immediately: banks are not failing, the region is growing faster than anyone expected.

His most important clarification is on what the gap actually represents: it is not about banks being unable to serve the market, it is about the ambition of the region growing at a pace that requires more capital than banks can provide alone. Saudi Arabia is driving it through infrastructure and megaprojects. The UAE is the financial hub structuring that capital. Private credit is the instrument filling the space between bank lending and the ambition.

On what a corporate must ask before taking private credit, his answer is the most practically useful in the conversation: it is not about speed first. The first question is whether the borrowing fits the balance sheet, specifically whether you are borrowing against fast receivables and short-term assets rather than long-term ones. Borrow the wrong way and the balance sheet looks ugly fast.
