Fifth Third Bank Expands FinTech Strategy With Innovation Banking and AI

How can traditional banks better support FinTech startups as artificial intelligence and embedded finance reshape the financial services industry? At Money20/20 USA 2026 in Las Vegas, Remy Blaire spoke with Dan Allred, Group Head of FinTech at Fifth Third Bank, about the launch of Fifth Third Innovation Banking, a platform designed to help venture backed startups and growing technology companies access the financial infrastructure, funding and banking services needed to scale.

Allred explained how Fifth Third Innovation Banking brought together specialized venture banking expertise, advanced payment capabilities and comprehensive financial services to support technology companies throughout their growth journeys. The initiative combined Fifth Third’s established banking operations with its Newline embedded banking platform and capabilities gained through its integration with Comerica, creating a more connected financial services offering for emerging businesses.

The conversation explored three core areas of Fifth Third’s FinTech strategy: corporate treasury and lending, embedded banking and payments, and asset backed financing. Allred discussed how the bank aimed to support founders from their earliest stages, providing essential financial services before introducing more sophisticated solutions such as API enabled payments, warehouse financing, securitization and structured capital as businesses expanded.

Artificial intelligence was another major focus at Money20/20 USA 2026. Allred highlighted how AI had become a central consideration for technology companies seeking investment, with founders increasingly expected to demonstrate how the technology could improve products, strengthen operations and create competitive advantages. He also discussed how investors were evaluating whether businesses could benefit from AI adoption or face disruption from more technologically advanced competitors.

Beyond supporting external FinTech companies, Fifth Third Bank had also been expanding its own use of artificial intelligence. Allred shared how the institution was applying AI across operational processes, including dispute management, chargeback management and loan servicing. These applications demonstrated how automation could help financial institutions improve efficiency, streamline workflows and strengthen customer service.

The discussion also examined how Fifth Third’s Newline platform supported embedded financial services and the movement of money at scale. With the bank’s commercial payments business processing more than $18 trillion annually, Allred explained how the institution’s existing infrastructure created opportunities to support FinTech companies requiring sophisticated financial capabilities as they grew.

As the banking and technology industries continued to converge, Allred emphasized the importance of building long term relationships with founders and adapting financial services to match their evolving business needs. His insights from Money20/20 USA 2026 highlighted how traditional banks were positioning themselves as strategic partners to innovative companies through specialized lending, embedded banking, scalable financial infrastructure and AI driven operational improvements.
