Wholesale Prices Jump Most Since 2022: Kevin Ford on Currencies

Kevin Ford, FX and Macro Strategist at Convera, joins Johny Fernandez as CPI comes in at 3.7% and wholesale prices surge 6.3%, the biggest jump since 2022, with Fed Chair Warsh having just declared he will no longer signal the Fed’s next move, leaving every upcoming data release carrying maximum weight.

His most important read on the PPI number is the one that goes beyond the headline: yes, energy drove the jump, but core PPI rose 0.7% and transportation and warehousing increased 3.4%. The pressure is much broader than crude oil alone. More pass-through is coming, but it will be uneven, with firms that have pricing power raising prices while others absorb through margins.

On the dollar and which currencies feel the most pressure as US rates stay high, his framework is the clearest available: the dividing line sits between high-carry commodity exporters, Brazil, Colombia, and externally vulnerable importers. Turkish lira and Egyptian pound remain most vulnerable. The UAE dirham stays stable on its dollar peg, though domestic monetary conditions tighten alongside whatever the Fed does.
