How Polygon Plans to Move Money From Banks to Blockchains

Polygon is evolving from a blockchain company into a regulated US payments business following its acquisition of Coinme. JD Durkin speaks with Marc Boiron, CEO of Polygon, about the deal, the company’s Open Money Stack, and why he believes the next era of payments will be built on blockchain rails.

Boiron says the next 10 to 15 years in payments will be about moving money from the off-chain world to the on-chain world, and that controlling the rails in the world’s biggest market is the best way to do it. He explains that the Coinme acquisition makes it more efficient to move money from bank accounts and physical cash onto blockchain rails, including Polygon, and then globally in a more transparent, cheaper, and programmatic way.

Boiron describes the Open Money Stack as a fully vertically integrated solution that, through a single API, lets businesses convert dollars into stablecoins, hold them in wallets that earn yield, move funds across blockchains, and move money back off-chain where stablecoins are not supported. He says the integration allows businesses to go live in weeks rather than months, and that companies adopting it, including Mesh, Toku, and Kira, see value in ease of integration and access, such as payroll providers sending funds globally in seconds and avoiding the pre-funding and delays common in cross-border payments.
