OnRe Is Bringing Reinsurance On-Chain and Keeping 15% of the Book Liquid From Day One

Ayyan Rahman, Co-Founder and Chief Strategy Officer of OnRe, joins Bassel Sabri at Definition by Accountable at Token 2049 in Singapore as the Bermuda-licensed reinsurance company brings property catastrophe reinsurance, US hurricanes, earthquakes, Japan typhoons, European windstorms, on-chain on Solana, offering a yield of 10 to 12% annually to investors who previously could not access the asset class at all.

His most important point is on what makes reinsurance a sustainable collateral asset on-chain compared to most DeFi yields: it is not driven by emissions, incentives, or crypto market volatility. It is driven by underwriting risk on major catastrophe events, and you are getting paid to hold that risk whether or not a hurricane hits. That structural yield is what DeFi protocols need and almost never have.

On liquidity, the number one request from institutions considering tokenised real world assets, his answer is the most concrete available: OnRe keeps 15 to 20% of the book liquid from day one. When you tokenise an asset, he argues, you have a responsibility to change the structure of the business to fit what decentralised finance actually needs, not just mint a token on top of a traditional structure and call it done.
