WMSJ’s Waseem Hoeneini on Why ESG Is Now About Financial Performance, Not Just Compliance

Waseem Hoeneini, Founder and Managing Partner of WMSJ, joins Lucy Gazmararian at the Arab Federation of Capital Markets conference in Abu Dhabi as an adviser to regulators and financial institutions on ESG, and makes the case that what used to be a boardroom discussion about risk scenarios is now expected to show up directly in financial statements.

His most important distinction is between how regulators and financial institutions think about ESG differently. Regulators look at the macro picture, how sustainability risk and opportunity is impacting the entire economy across listed and unlisted companies. Financial institutions look at their value chain, assessing how climate risk, water, nature, and governance impact the credit ability of the businesses they finance. Same data, entirely different lens.

On where the Arab region stands, his verdict is straightforward: most Arab stock exchanges are moving toward clear reporting requirements aligned with climate change, and the growth of green, blue, and sustainability-linked financing will attract more investors to the region. The direction is right and the momentum is building.
