How Varda Plans to Manufacture Drugs in Space

Varda Space Industries is scaling its effort to manufacture products in orbit and return them to Earth after raising $250 million at a $1.6 billion valuation. Will Bruey, CEO and Co-Founder of Varda Space Industries, joins JD Durkin to discuss how the new capital is supporting a growing fleet of commercial reentry vehicles for pharmaceutical and government customers.

Bruey explains why microgravity could create unique opportunities for drug manufacturing by changing the behavior of chemical systems in ways that are not possible on Earth. Varda is preparing a mission carrying a cancer drug that will explore whether manufacturing in microgravity can increase its solubility.

The conversation also explores Varda’s transition toward fleet based operations. Bruey says the company recently launched two commercial reentry vehicles simultaneously and is working to turn technology previously demonstrated in space into a repeatable production system capable of serving pharmaceutical and defense customers.
