How AI Agents Could Transform Payments and Commerce

The race to develop and deploy artificial intelligence is increasingly moving beyond chatbots and traditional AI tools toward autonomous agents that can transact, shop and make decisions on behalf of users. Frank Sinton, CEO of  Adgentek, joins Remy Blaire from the New York Stock Exchange to discuss the rise of agentic commerce and the competitive landscape between the U.S. and China.

Sinton says the focus should remain on innovation while ensuring companies take responsibility for building safe and trustworthy AI systems. He highlights agentic commerce as a major emerging area, where autonomous AI agents could understand consumer preferences and complete transactions such as booking hotels, purchasing products and managing payments.

The conversation also explores China’s progress in developing standards for AI agents and the role of major payments companies including Visa, Mastercard, PayPal and Stripe in shaping the future of agent based commerce. Sinton discusses the importance of allowing innovation to develop while addressing questions around data access, privacy and regulation.

Trust and identity are also emerging as critical components of AI powered transactions. Sinton says users need confidence when giving an AI agent access to their money and wallets, while systems must be able to verify identity and ensure transactions are handled securely.

The discussion concludes with the potential convergence of advertising, commerce and AI. Sinton explains how AI agents could respond to personalized offers, loyalty programs and discounts, creating new opportunities for businesses while raising the need for appropriate safeguards.
