Why Banks Need to Prepare for Quantum Computing

Quantum computing is emerging as a major security challenge for the financial industry, with concerns that future quantum machines could eventually break encryption systems used today. William Herkelrath, CEO of Algorand, joins Remy Blaire from the New York Stock Exchange to discuss the growing need for post quantum security and the risks of harvest now, decrypt later attacks.

Herkelrath explains how Algorand has been preparing for the quantum threat, including its move toward quantum resistant technology across its network. He says the broader financial industry will need to transition from existing encryption systems to next generation security as quantum computing develops.

The conversation also explores the intersection of artificial intelligence and cybersecurity. Herkelrath says AI can expose weaknesses in existing systems, while post quantum cryptography can make the mathematics required to break encryption significantly more difficult. He also discusses Algorand’s plans to work with other blockchain protocols as part of a broader effort to strengthen the Web3 ecosystem.

Herkelrath says the transition to post quantum security will be a major, multi year undertaking for financial institutions and technology companies. He also highlights the need for organizations to prepare early, noting that the technical changes involve larger data packets, new compression systems and significant infrastructure upgrades.
