How Drones and Satellites Could Stop Wildfires Before They Spread

New technology could help detect and stop wildfires before they become destructive, with satellites, drones and autonomous systems emerging as potential tools for faster response. David Babson, EVP of Energy, Climate & Nature at XPRIZE, joins JD Durkin after ringing the Closing Bell at the New York Stock Exchange to discuss the organization’s wildfire technology competition.

Babson explains how competing teams are developing systems designed to identify emerging wildfires and deploy drones or autonomous vehicles before the fires spread. The competition tested satellite based wildfire detection in Australia and autonomous response systems in Alaska, bringing together entrepreneurs, academics and scientists to develop technologies that can scale.

Looking ahead, Babson says advances in technology could provide greater capacity to respond to wildfires quickly around the world. He discusses why scalable detection and response systems are becoming increasingly important as wildfires become a broader and more persistent challenge.
