IotaComm Bets on AI and Licensed Spectrum to Power Smart Buildings

IotaComm is betting that its combination of licensed wireless spectrum, facility data and recurring revenue can help drive its next phase of growth, with management targeting a potential corporate event within the next two to three years. Founder and CEO Terrence DeFranco says that could take the form of an IPO or a sale, with the company viewing an IPO as a potential catalyst for further growth.

DeFranco joins Kristin Myers on Startup to Stock Exchange to explain IotaComm’s facility intelligence platform, which connects buildings and physical assets to data that can be analyzed for energy savings, efficiency and extended asset life. At the foundation of the business is a portfolio of FCC-licensed 800 MHz spectrum that the company says has been independently valued at roughly $85 million.

The conversation also explores IotaComm’s business model and the challenges of selling into markets ranging from K through 12 education and municipalities to manufacturing, hospitals and hotels. DeFranco points to Samsara as a model for IotaComm, particularly its focus on recurring revenue, while arguing that solving measurable customer problems is more important than simply developing applications.

DeFranco also describes artificial intelligence as a catalyst for the business, saying organizations increasingly need more data to power AI tools. IotaComm’s longer term vision includes what he calls “self-thinking buildings” and “self-thinking cities,” while maintaining human oversight and using AI to increase efficiency rather than replace people.
