Fintech Companies Are Ahead on ESG, and the Reason Is Who Founded Them

Dr. Khakan Najaf, Associate Professor of Accounting at Canadian University Dubai, joins Raghda Ibraheem with research findings that challenge the common assumption that fintech companies lag on sustainability, they are actually well ahead of traditional firms, and the reason comes down to who is running them.

His research covers two distinct dynamics. During the Covid period, fintech companies outperformed their traditional counterparts on financial metrics like return on equity. But banks that adopted fintech through sandboxes and digital transformation were more exposed to cyber attacks, a direct consequence of the connectivity that fintech enables. The pros and cons are real and simultaneous.

On ESG, the gap is striking. From 2010 to 2019, fintechs were catching up to traditional firms. Today they are far ahead. His explanation: most fintech founders are retired CEOs of major companies who understand from experience how to manage, monitor, and report ESG. They run smaller boards but better ones. And while traditional companies fill 500-page integrated reports with future-tense commitments about what they will do, fintechs report in past tense, what they have already done.
