Monad’s DeFi TVL Just Crossed $800 Million : Here’s What’s Driving the Surge

Eunice Giarta, Co-Founder of the Monad Foundation, joins Johny Fernandez as the Monad blockchain surpasses $800 million in DeFi total value locked, and as the Monad Foundation becomes a founding member of the X402 open-source payments protocol alongside Visa, Google, Coinbase, Stripe, and AWS.

Her framing of what AI and blockchain enable together is the clearest available: existing financial systems impose two frictions on participants, access and availability. AI is eliminating the access barrier. Blockchain can eliminate the availability barrier. Together, they point toward a financial system that is always on, always working, and open to anyone.

On the open versus closed debate, which she applies to both AI and blockchain simultaneously, her position is unambiguous. She draws a direct parallel: frontier AI models like Claude and ChatGPT versus open weight models like DeepSeek and Llama is the same debate as public permissionless blockchains versus corporate-controlled chains. She is firmly on the open side of both. Artificial advantages should not be a threat in either.

On the momentum around corporate chains potentially fragmenting the industry, she is candid: the Monad Foundation is committed to open access. The model she is working toward is one where blockchain acts as the backbone of the financial internet, open, neutral, and accessible, not privately controlled infrastructure owned by corporations.
