Why Populism Is Reshaping American Politics

Populism is reshaping politics across the United States, with movements on both the left and the right gaining influence ahead of the 2026 midterm elections. From the rise of progressive candidates and Democratic Socialists to the continued strength of MAGA politics, the traditional boundaries of the Democratic and Republican parties are being challenged.

Joining the discussion is Mark Bloomfield, Chair of the Board of Directors at the American Council for Capital Formation (ACCF). Mark puts the current political moment into historical context, explaining how populism has appeared throughout American history and why today’s movements share surprising similarities with populist movements of the past.

The conversation also explores where left- and right-wing populists agree including concerns over globalization, free trade, domestic manufacturing, corporate influence, and political elites and where they sharply diverge on issues such as immigration, taxation, healthcare, labor unions, national identity, and economic nationalism. Mark also explains why the rise of populism is not limited to the United States and could have major implications for economic and foreign policy around the world.
